My thesis work aimed to understand how mycorrhizal communities associated with piñon changed after local piñon extirpation. Piñon and its associated mycorrhizal partners are dependent on each other, or in other words, they cannot survive without each other. My thesis work demonstrates how drastically these fungal communities change after the removal of piñon. The results of my study will help with replanting and conservation efforts in piñon-juniper woodlands.
